Patient Advocate/Court Liaison - Full Time

Job Description:

The Patient Advocate/Court Liaison focuses on advocacy on behalf of patients while partnering with the courts. This role assists with investigations of complaints from or concerning patients. Responsibilities also include activities related to court advocacy and assisting with performance improvement data entry. This position establishes strong working relationships with court personnel, patients, and co-workers.

Essential Duties:

  • Serves as point of contact and intermediary to respond to patient, family, caregiver and/or guardian concerns within time frames designated by hospital and regulatory guidelines.
  • Works to resolve patients' complaints and grievances.
  • Documents concerns, grievances and investigates complaints related to mental health services.
  • May participate in hearings or legal proceedings.
  • Assist with data entry and compliance with regulatory standards as directed by supervisor.
  • Complies with facility safety, infection control and security program.
  • Upholds the Organization's ethics and customer service standards.
    • Follow and track patients who may be on a Notice of Emergency Detainment (NED), Order of Protective Custody (OPC) or a court ordered medication status (time sensitive).
    • Prepare and file court documents. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Employee may perform other related duties to meet the ongoing needs of the hospital.

      Requirements

      Education and/or Licensure -High School diploma or equivalent required. A bachelor's degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or a field related to the delivery of mental health services preferred.

      Experience - At least one year experience as a mental health worker, case worker, clinician, or social worker in a mental health environment; or a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the above employment standard and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

      Additional Requirements - Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) is a plus. Must possess or obtain SAMA (Satori Alternatives to Managing Aggression) and CPR certification within 30 days of hire.

      Knowledge Skills and Abilities
      • Knowledge of interviewing and conflict resolution techniques.
      • Knowledgeable of patient rights and laws pertaining to mental health.
      • Must have basic PC skills that include a combination of working in a Windows Operating System and using Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
      • Must have excellent communication skills and be a good listener with a pleasant demeanor that encourages and engages others.
      • Must be able to multi-task and prioritize using strong time management skills.
      • Ability to collect and analyze information, draw logical conclusions, and make sound recommendations.
      • Maintain effective working relationships with patients, their families, treatment teams, and community organizations.
      • Ability to speak effectively on behalf of patients and the facility.
      • Represent the facility with tact and diplomacy.
      • Able to exercise independent judgement.
      • Must maintain objectivity and a high-level of confidentiality.
