Job Description:
Southwestern University, located in Georgetown, has an immediate
opening for a Upward Bound Academic Coordinator in its Academic
Support department. Upward Bound is a federal grant-funded project
that provides fundamental support to participants in their
preparation for college entrance. The project provides
opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college
performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits.
Upward Bound serves high school students that are first generation
(neither parent holds a college degree) and hail from families that
are low income. The goal of the program is to increase the rate at
which participants complete high school, enroll in and graduate
from institutions of postsecondary education. This is an in-person,
full-time, twelve-month, Exempt position with full benefits who
reports to the Director of Upward Bound. Primary duties: Coordinate
and conduct group and individual advising sessions for new program
participants. Design activities to enhance and foster student
success during the academic year Assist with in-person and online
recruitment workshops at high school and community sites.
Coordinate in person and online tutoring and other supportive
services to assist program participants with high school
achievement. Actively build educational relationships with
students, parents and school officials to promote the values of the
program. Compile accurate documentation on program participants and
contacts. Assist with summer planning including creating schedules,
coordinating classes, workshops and field trips. Generate and
maintain Individualized Academic Program Plan for each participant.
Coordinate the annual newsletter. Maintain accurate paper and
database records. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of pre-college
preparation, college admissions and financial aid information. Must
be available to work extended hours, including some Saturdays and
evening hours. Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in Education, Human Services or a related field
Experience providing assistance and advising secondary students on
entering post-secondary education Proven ability to initiate and
maintain cooperative working relationships with others including
high school students, campus personnel and students, parents and
colleagues Proficiency in computer applications including the
Microsoft and Google suite of programs Preferred Position
Requirements: At least one-year experience in secondary school
advising, teaching or pre-college outreach TRIO experience
Knowledge of Texas High School curriculum Verbal proficiency in
Spanish Additional Requirements: Sensitivity for and commitment to
addressing the needs of low-income and first-generation students
and their families Desire to be a resource and a role model for
project participants and their families Ability to effectively
supervise and establish and maintain appropriate boundaries with
project participants Excellent interpersonal, public relations and
oral and written communication skills Commitment to providing
outstanding customer service with the ability to demonstrate
courtesy, tact and discretion at all times\ Self-starter,
enthusiastic committed to excellence, continuous improvement and
student advocacy Ability to contribute to team efforts to
