SUMMARY: As AirBorn grows toward our ambitious objectives, current manufacturing methods are no longer sufficient. Strategic improvements in operational cost and efficiency through process flow, tool design, factory automation, connecting our front-line operations with the timely information needed to reliably and successfully complete their tasks, and efficiently gathering, reporting and analyzing operational information is required. As part of an Advanced Manufacturing and Technology team, and working closely with cross-functional teams and suppliers, the Manufacturing Process Development Engineer will equip the workforce with characterized, optimized and qualified processes that are efficient, repeatable, reliable, and create flow. This role will define and oversee strategic automation solutions and process designs in both existing products and new product development, as individual workstations or entire production lines, while also working closely with Digital Manufacturing Engineering to enable data intelligence gathering and delivery as part of an Industry 4.0 future.The successful candidate has a proven track record of problem solving, innovation, working well in a multi-functional team environment, being detail oriented, managing multiple complex projects simultaneously, and ensuring that timeline landmark commitments are achieved while maintaining Safety, Quality, Cost, and Performance targets for efficiency savings and value.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Other duties may be assigned.

  • Ideate, lead, coordinate and oversee automation and process improvement projects, ensuring cost and quality expectations are met. Projects could be launched at any site within AirBorn
  • Provide Design for Manufacturability and Assembly reviews on new product designs
  • Solve for complex manufacturing problems in a low volume, high mix environment
  • Manage execution of assigned projects in a manner that drives through challenges to deliver on commitments
  • Communicate clearly in verbal, written, and graphical formats
  • Demonstrate the ability to multi-task and run large-scale programs
  • Assist in the development and management of detailed operational improvement and innovation roadmaps at the enterprise, site, and project levels, aligning with AirBorn's strategic plans
  • Provide regular progress reports on activities
  • Coach and develop sustaining manufacturing engineers and technicians
  • Conduct detailed, on-site vendor assessments and audits
  • Complete detailed, documented process designs and qualifications through APQP tools such as Process FMEA, DFM/A, Control Planning, Process Capability Studies
  • Provide input to defining and developing centers of excellence in various competency tracks
  • Develop and implement various cost savings and quality improvement projects
  • Utilize PTC Creo to design various tools, jigs and fixtures
  • Effectively communicate with operations and technical leadership on proposals and active projects.
  • Apply Six Sigma methods in validating equipment and providing process controls that ensure quality and performance requirements are met
  • Conduct detailed, on-site, vendor assessments and audits
  • Interface with customers and organizational bodies as a Manufacturing Engineering representative KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Requires the knowledge typically acquired through:
    • Completion of a Bachelor' s degree from a four year college or university,
    • 5+ years related experience and/ or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Proven experience and accomplishments in solving problems and delivering innovative solutions in a manufacturing environment, especially low-volume, high-mix
    • Ability to work well in a multi-functional team environment, detail oriented, manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, and ensure that timeline landmark commitments are achieved while maintaining Safety, Quality, Cost, and Performance targets for efficiency savings and value
    • 3D CAD design experience (PTC Creo preferred)
    • LEAN Methodologies
    • Practical experience working with robotics, vision systems, PLCs and sensors
    • Experience in controls engineering and Industry 4.0 techniques a plus
    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
    • Ability to write articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format and effectively present information to top management
    • Practical statistical methods. Six Sigma training or certification a plus
    • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
    • Effective verbal and communications skills
